PIP scandal prompts call for tighter regulation on other cosmetic procedures

January 21st, 2012

As news of the PIP Implant scandal broke just before Christmas, it became the catalyst for a broader discussion on the need for tighter regulations on both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

At the top of this broader agenda is the discussion surrounding dermal fillers, a largely unregulated industry in the UK. To give some perspective, just six dermal fillers are regulated for use in the USA, yet here there are over 100 on the market.

At Surrey Plastic Surgery Services we treat dermal fillers as we do all of our other procedures, which are conducted as a medical procedures, carried out by specially trained medical professionals in a clinical environment using medical grade products. We use Restylane™ and Juvederm™ both one of the six products licensed for use in America and in the UK and both have been in use for a number of years and subjected to rigourous clinical trials. As with all of the products we use, we pride ourselves on care and quality, and our team conducts thorough research before offering products to our patients.

Problems with dermal fillers can arise when administered in an inadequate environment by unqualifed staff .  There is no legislation on who can inject dermal fillers so before having the treatment, ask to see training certificates and insurance certificates, and if in doubt seek further opinions before making a commitment.

If you are considering dermal fillers, or are currently using them, SPSS strongly recommends using a medical professional who offer transparency and traceablilty of their products. We offer both, so if you have any questions, or would like to book an initial consultation, call our Patient Care Manager on 0800 112 3393 or email her on elaine.bailey@surreyplasticsurgeryservices.com

We have a range of clinics in location across Surrey enabling you to find a time and place to suit your lifestyle. To find out more on the dermal fillers we use, click here to visit our Dermal Filler webpage.

UK surgeons reiterate caution on controversial implants

December 28th, 2011

If concerned, or with adverse symptoms, see your surgeon.

In light of news that the French Government may consider explantation (removal of implants) for the 30,000 women in France who have controversial PIP devices filled with non-medical grade silicone, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (www.baaps.org.uk) have reiterated guidance and urged calm.

Mr Geoffrey Wilson, consultant plastic surgeon at Surrey Plastic Surgery Services is a full member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and wishes to confirm that he has never used PIP implants in any of his procedures.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and former BAAPS President Douglas McGeorge;

“The message here is not to panic – our main advice remains unchanged. Women with PIP implants should be checked by the clinic where they had their surgery and can then be monitored afterwards. These implants have a higher failure rate so there will be women who might choose to have their implants removed before that happens, whereas others will be happy to be monitored.”

Consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS President Fazel Fatah says;

“There has been no new scientific evidence to indicate that these implants have a link to cancer – however, if women are concerned or experience adverse symptoms they should see their surgeon, to discuss options such as having a scan to determine whether there is any weakening or rupture. If there is, we reiterate our previous recommendations in line with the French agency AFSSAPS: to have both implants removed.”

‘Fast, Steady, Stop’ initiative rules out Botox therapy for Hyperhidrosis on Surrey NHS

November 30th, 2010

New government equals new budget cuts and in Surrey this translates to a crackdown on treatments deemed unnecessary within the NHS with the trust proclaiming; “If you don’t need it, the NHS won’t pay for it.”

 The decision to not treat hyperhidrosis on the NHS, apart from in exceptional circumstances, means that sufferers of the condition – which causes heavy sweating and can be both emotionally and psychologically distressing – will a have to seek help  from a private physician.

At Surrey Plastic Surgery Services, we have been carrying out treatment of Hyperhidrosis using Botox® for 15 years with countless satisfied patients. The simple procedure, which takes around half an hour, requires no local anaesthetic or special preparation. Afterwards, there may be tiny pinprick marks in the treated area for a few hours, and rarely some minor bruising but normal activities can be resumed immediately. This minor procedure achieves outstanding results for around 75% of patients with their sweating being substantially reduced, if not eliminated, for two to eight months and many return for further treatment thereafter.

Hyperhidrosis is defined as sweating more than your body needs to in order to keep your body temperature regulated. There is no definite boundary but if you feel like you are sweating excessively, to a point where your sweating becomes a hindrance to your everyday routine and an interference to your social life then you may have hyperhidrosis. It can occur anywhere, from the palms of the hands to the soles of the feet, to the armpits or even the face.

Hyperhidrosis is present in around 3% of the British population with more cases becoming apparent as people learn that there is a relatively quick and easy treatment available. So don’t be embarrassed any longer, our team at Surrey Plastic Surgery Services are professional and discreet ensuring that you are provided with the best care both during and after your appointment.

Call us today on 0800 112 3393 for more information or to book a consultation with our experts or visit www.surreyplasticsurgeryservices.com/services/botox
